With heavy hearts
Some of withdrawn athletes leave Paris
I published an article about how the Great Britain Team was going to play in the ITTF Para Elite Yvelines 2025. While I deleted the article because it didn’t feel right to keep it up. I did mention they lost a dear member of the staff who was the Performance Director. I met him for a second in Spokane. A quick “hello”, but I did not realize how much this man meant to every single person on the team.
After he passed, I kept seeing all these pictures of him with every single member on the team. Whether it be Instagram or Facebook, so many pictures of the player with his proud nickname “G”. Gorazd Vecko MBE was loved by all. He knew he did not have long before he would go, but NOT right before the Yvelines tournament. This was a major shock to the team that already left to play.
In the determination of GB, they came back with 3 gold medals (Fliss, Rob, and Will) and 4 bronze medals (PK, Aaron, Josh, and Bly).
All the teammates had a vote to withdraw from the rest of the matches. The wheelchair athletes stayed to play the rest of the tournament.
His funeral is tomorrow in Slovenia. Wishing wonderful thoughts to his wife Sabina.
Rest in Peace G.
